A Video Tour of the Trailer Park Homestead

I feel like when I give you photo updates, it might be kind of hard to visualize how all the random pictures fit together.  I'm hoping this video tour puts the pieces together.  It is hard for me to watch though, since apparently my netbook's webcam shoots in reverse!  It looks really weird to me to have everything the opposite of the way it looks to me!  I apologize for the video quality as well, but, like I said, I shot it on my nebook's webcam!

  1. In case you didn't get the reference to Oak Park with regards to vegetables in the front yard, I was referring to the case of Julie Bass, who is facing a misdemeanor charge in Oak Park for having a veggie garden in her front yard. 2. Congratulations on fitting so much into your yard, and making it look so nice, too.

I saw ground cherries mentioned on another blog. Are they tomatillos?

  3. They are related but not the exact same thing.

  4. You have made me feel both awed and shamed ~said with a small smile~

Awed, because you have such a large variety of food on such a small space. Here I've been thinking I don't have enough room to grow all that I want to grow, and you've put that notion to rest.

Shamed because I've been so proud of the little amount I've planted - it looks pathetic next to yours. I've only got a few strawberry plants, a couple of sunflowers, mint, and four tomato plants (which technically aren't even planted yet - I was just given them).

  5. The idea is to inspire, not shame. :-) Any effort is a good start. Two years ago, I only had the two garden boxes. Last year, I had the garden boxes plus a bunch of buckets and other containers. This year, you can see what I have. Next year, I'll probably have even more. It is an ongoing effort, to push ahead and not let limitations like lack of land stop me, or anyone from doing what they want to do. It IS possible, that's what I'm trying to show people here. :-)

  7. Well count me as inspired. I am very lucky to have a huge yard and even a green house that was here when we bought the place. So I've always grown tomatoes in there, and a garden outside. I've gotten frustrated with weeding so my gardens have gotten smaller and smaller each year. I'm down to a 4x6 raised bed and some corn and zucchini plants and a row of potatoes. I did get some raspberry plants off freecycle just this summer, so that's a step forward. I've been reading your blog this summer and it's inspired me to plant more next year. Your excitement about gardening has helped me be more excited about mine. Thanks for showing us your garden.

  8. If you notice, I have ways of keeping weeding to a minimum, like not having paths that are stripped down to the soil, using weed cloth over large areas of plantlessness, using mulch, and using large, vining plants as living mulch to limit weeds.

Glad to hear you find my blog so inspirational!

  9. I just found your blog, and I absolutely loved the tour. I am inspired to work harder at my garden. I live in the TX panhandle where we are experiencing a drought....1.52 inches of rain for 2011, as well as having hot weather (so far 20 days this summer of temperatures over 100 degrees and the weatherman calling 97 a cool front) and as I looked at my garden today I thought about just throwing in the towel for this year....but you have inspired me to keep on watering. glad I found you!
